ABOUT THE GAMES
The Greek-Canadian Games is an annual event which will be held on June 2nd-3rd, 2018 in Markham for youth aged 6-14. The ongoing goal of the Greek-Canadian Games is to continue to bring together youth that are dispersed throughout a large geographic area. This spring, the GCGs will bring over 500 youth athletes, and over 200 volunteers, for a weekend of various sporting and social events. The Games are being organized by our Committee, a group of dedicated volunteers and is a not-for-profit organization.
Participants can expect to take part in a variety of individual and team sports, such as:
* Track events
(sprinting and long distance)
* Field events (softball toss, standing/running long jump, shot put, and javelin - safety proof)
* Ball hockey
As a participant, you'll also take part in Opening Ceremony on Saturday morning, Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning, and the Closing Ceremony Panigiri on Sunday afternoon, at the athletic venue (Bill Crothers Secondary).
The GCGs are held annually at a world class sporting facility at Bill Crothers SS at 44 Main St Unionville, Unionville, ON.
The GCGs encourages all kids aged 6-14 on the date of that years Games to participate as an athlete. As well, all individuals aged 15 and above on the date of that years Games are welcomed to participate as a volunteer.
The Greek Canadian Games does its best (with no promises) to facilitate your requests for House Distribution without compromising fairness. On the registration form, each athlete is asked which community do they best identify with e.g. Greek Community of Toronto and we try our best to facilitate those wishes.
The GCGs are made possible by its athletes, parents, and sponsors. Any involvement in this capacity would be greatly appreciated and we welcome all parents to partake in all the weekend festivities!
Typically, the Games are kicked off in grand fashion with a blessing of the Games, athlete oath, introduction of its ambassadors and most importantly a thunderous cheer off between the Houses of that year!
The Closing ceremony consists of announcing medal winners and the prestigious House Cup! In addition, we recognize academic and philanthropic achievement with scholarships and awards. Lastly, the Games comes to a close with a traditional Greek “glenti”: filled with a Lamb roast, BBQ, and loads of Greek Dancing! It is truly a can't miss celebration!
Sponsorship fees go towards subsidizing athlete registration, equipment, medals, venue and t-shirt costs for both athletes and volunteers, scholarships for athletes and volunteers, coverage for global and community ambassadors, snacks for volunteers, and finally, fees for the closing ceremony panigiri which includes free bbq for athletes and volunteers. Additionally sponsorship goes towards maintenance of website fees, video and social medial coverage for the Games. It also covers fees for volunteer orientation day (which includes free food).
The Athlete registration fee goes towards t-shirts, snacks and back packs, venue costs, and equipment. Special events through the year which this year included the Welcome Back Bash for athletes - with free food and games for the kids.
